Position: Camp Instructors (2)
Contract: June 30th to August 3rd, 2010
Pay: $2400 + training
The Canoe Museum is looking for 2 energetic individuals to lead CanoeKids Paddling Camp this summer. Paddling Camp will be a series of four 5-day long canoeing day camps spent at the Canoe Museum and on the Otonabee River in Peterborough. Along with following the ORCKA Flatwater Canoeing Program, a strong emphasis is placed on the art of canoeing, along with the stories, songs, crafts and games that are associated with canoeing in Canada.
CanoeKids Paddling Camp
Job Title: Camp Instructor (2 positions)
Department: Education
Reports To: Education Coordinators; Carolyn Hyslop & Jen Burnard
Job Description: Instruction and Coordination of Paddling Camps
Salary: $600 Weekly. To be paid out bi-weekly. Training compensation provided.
Start Date: June 30th, 2010 (possibility of starting earlier)
Finish Date: August 3rd, 2010
Minimum Qualifications:
- ORCKA member in good standing.
- ORCKA Flatwater Instructor/Basic Canoeing Instructor.
- Standard First Aid and CPR (Wilderness First Aid preferred).
- Bronze Cross (NLS preferred).
- Current and clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks.
Successful Candidates Will Possess:
- Experience in delivering the ORCKA Flatwater Canoeing/Basic Canoeing program.
- Experience conducting and administering at least 2 Flatwater courses for ORCKA.
- Strong risk management skills and strong decision making abilities.
- Proven experience with creating engaging and dynamic programs.
- Strong organizational skills are recommended i.e) program planning, reporting, purchasing materials, etc.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with another person cooperatively as a leadership team.
- Camp experience or equivalent experience is recommended.
- Ability to liaise with camper’s parents, Education Coordinator, Museum staff, volunteers and Rowing Club members.
- Maturity and strong sense of responsibility and dedication.
- Proven experience and a passion for working with youth ages 10-14 in alternative settings.
- Comfort and willingness to be outdoors with learners regardless of the weather.
- Positive, upbeat and energetic and able to go, go, go!
- Additional skills and interests in nature and/or historical interpretation, artisan skills, music, arts, or drama would be an asset.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn and run cooperative games, initiative tasks and group building exercises.
